Parenting with adults: new briefing paper
"Things fall apart as soon as they turn 18”
Over the last six months, we have been working with our members and partners to explore the topic of parenting with adults. Within our sector we see a range of policies, research, and publications around raising children - however, the focus seems to be lost once children legally become adults. Some of our members who support parents and carers with adult children identified this as an under-explored topic. This led to us convening a special roundtable discussion in September 2024.
The roundtable brought together parents and carers, members and other relevant stakeholders to explore the topic. Several issues came to light through our discussions including the lack of strategy or policy in Scotland specifically addressing the needs of parents supporting adult children.
In response to the roundtable discussion, we are publishing our latest briefing which summarises the findings from the roundtable and offers key recommendations on how the needs of this parent group can be better met at policy and practice levels.
The briefing and its recommendations are supported by the following organisations:
- Aberlour
- Carers Trust Scotland
- Contact
- The Donaldson Trust
- Families Outside
- The Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland
- One Parent Families Scotland
- Scottish Autism
- Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs.
PAS extends our grateful thanks to the organisations, parents and carers who took part in the roundtable discussion and shared their experiences. As part of the briefing launch, we shared the briefing with politicians and decision makers to start conversations about how we can ensure that parents of adults are better supported.
