Keeping children safe online
As well as keeping people safe on the streets, Police Scotland’s officers and staff work to help keep the public safe online.
The Police Scotland Cybercrime Harm Prevention Team proactively look to keep the public safe from online harm by raising awareness and providing signposting to educational resources.
Online harm is behaviour online which may cause a person emotional, psychological or financial distress. It continues to increase in scale and complexity, but most online harm can be prevented with small changes in your online behaviour and by developing good habits that don't require the assistance of an Information Technology expert.
Our advice is simple to follow and reduces the potential of becoming a victim of online harm, making you and your family less vulnerable, more confident and allowing you to use the online world safely.
On the 22nd of October 2025, in partnership with Parenting Across Scotland, the team will be hosting a virtual event for parents and carers to discuss how to keep children and young people safe in an ever-increasing digital world. There will be a short presentation, followed by the opportunity to ask any questions. We will cover topics including digital footprints, cyberbullying, sextortion, online gaming and scams.
We are inviting you to join us for this relaxed easy to follow event and look forward to seeing you there.
