Advanced Infant Mental Health Training

NHS Education for Scotland is pleased to offer an Advanced Infant Mental Health training scheme to early years workers in Scotland. This scheme is offered through the Psychology of Parenting team and builds on the success of our other infant and childhood mental health training initiatives.

The scheme involves a combination of academic study, practice-related learning and supervision. Successful applicants will initially undertake a structured period of online study for 16 weeks, followed by training in a selected structured infant mental health intervention. They will be supported to develop their skills further by delivering that intervention while receiving appropriate supervision/coaching. After that, they may progress to become authorised to deliver training and supervision/coaching in their own area.

Applications are now invited from practitioners (from a wide variety of professional backgrounds and employing authorities), with the relevant motivation, experience and management support to allow them to embark on both the academic and practical training elements of the scheme, and then to deliver the interventions under supervision and in line with the best implementation practices.

The training course is best suited to practitioners who already have a degree level qualification and who also have a few years’ experience of delivering services to families with infants pre-birth to 18 months of age. Equally importantly, practitioners will need to demonstrate managerial support to deliver the intervention to appropriate families, specifically those where the inter-parent relationship is compromised by significant parental emotional stress/distress.
