'Tricky Moments', a new resource from ENABLE Scotland, is full of practical tips and strategies for managing children's challenging behaviour. Parents and teachers of children with additional support needs supplied the tips - so they come tried and tested!
The booklet contains nine aspects of challenging behaviour which parents identified as causing them most concern: aggressive behaviour, repetitive questioning/actions, sexualised behaviour, withdrawal, toilet training, inappropriate language, eating challenges, separation anxiety and difficulties with sleeping.
We have developed workshops for parents on several of these topics, and these form the cornerstone of our 'Parents Together' information events, held at various locations in Scotland at least once a year. We hope to develop offer associated training for parenting practitioners and teachers.
Initial feedback from parents has been extremely positive. One parent said, 'Thank you so much for this booklet. I've read it but I think I need to carry it around like a bible! I'm sure that my reactions are a good part of my son's problems but it's hard to re-train yourself! Thank you for thinking of me!'
